Boiler Room
The apartment buildings and the shopping center are heated from a central boiler room. The heating plant is located in a separate building which covers an area equal to one square block, 148 feet by 144 feet.
The heating system is a double pipe up-feed vacuum system. Steam is generated from a central high-pressure boiler plant in which the steam pressure is 125 pounds. Steam travels through underground mains to the various buildings. The steam pressure is reduced in two stages to the five pounds necessary to supply heat to all the radiators in the buildings.
There are three water tube boilers with oil fired steam automatic burners, capable of developing 2,250 horsepower and generating 150,000 pounds of steam each hour. There are ten oil storage tanks with a total capacity of 200,000 gallons.
